The Arizona Musical Theatre Orchestra is America’s first community-based orchestra and chorus dedicated to musical theatre. The ensemble brings the Broadway Cast Recording to life in concert, offering audiences a unique and immersive way to experience these theatrical stories. In the summer of 2022, Founder Stephen Schermitzler channeled inspiration into a Facebook post, asking the Arizona community if they would like to play and sing through full-length Broadway musicals for fun. With nearly 300 replies in 24 hours, the first private AZMTO Showcase took place on August 27th, at Central United Methodist Church in downtown Phoenix.
SHOWCASE
Showcases are weekend celebrations of full-length Broadway musicals! Around 100 participants gather to form a full orchestra, SATB chorus, and lead roles. After 1-3 days of rehearsal, one public performance is given, on-book, in symphonic style. You've never heard your favorite shows performed like this before! Showcases are open to everyone with a passion for music and theatre.

UNDERSCORE
AZMTO's newest program reads through full-length musicals in classroom style with chorus, leads, and piano. These private, educational sing-a-longs promote music reading, choral singing, and collaboration through exploration of musical theatre. Underscore events are open to all ages. Knowing how to read sheet music is highly recommended.
